Lila: The Star Borrowers

Lila, part 1. A free five-minute bedtime story from CloudSheep.

The moon hung over Sleepy Lake, round and bright. Lila and James sat on the soft grass by the water. The sky glittered with stars, but Lila pointed up and frowned. "There is a little space," she said. "One star is missing." A thin silver path of light stretched across the dark lake. James leaned close to the water. The silver path on the lake seemed to wiggle and beckon. Little bright dots floated along it, like crumbs of light. "Maybe the missing star fell down here," James whispered. Lila stood up. "Let us follow the shimmers," she said, and they walked along the shore.

Soon they saw a gray otter on a smooth rock. A soft glow shone from a bead on his chest. The bead was tucked in a little woven necklace of grass. "Hello," Lila called. "I am Lila, and this is James." The otter lifted his head. "I am Ollie," he said. "I borrowed a bit of your star."

"I was afraid in my den," Ollie said. "It was very dark. I asked the star for a tiny piece, so I could see my paws and my favorite shell." Lila and James listened, their faces soft. The bead on Ollie’s chest gave a warm pale light. "Thank you for telling us," James said. The silver path on the lake still gleamed ahead.

Farther along, they heard a tiny splash. A small green frog sat on a lily pad, toes shining with golden light. "I am Mira," she said. "I borrowed a spark for my tadpoles. They were scared of the dark water." Little round shapes wriggled under the pad, lit by the star glow on her toes. Lila knelt and watched them wiggle.

Next they found a brown turtle on a flat log. A gentle light shone from a line along her shell. "I am Bruna," she said. "I borrowed a strip of the star to mark the safe side of the log. Little bugs sit here at night, and I did not want them to fall." Lila stroked the smooth shell. "Now the bugs can see the edge," Lila said.

Near the reeds, a fluffy beaver stacked branches. A small bright chip of star sat on top of his dam. "I am Pip," he said. "I borrowed this so ducks can find the dam in the dark. They like to sleep near the steady water." Ducks floated nearby, their feathers touched by the glow. Lila and James smiled at the quiet scene.

At the end of the silver path stood a white heron in the shallows. A bright thread of star light wound around one long leg. "I am Lumi," she said. "I borrowed a strand to guide fireflies that got lost over the lake." Soft glowing bugs gathered near her. Lila looked around at every tiny piece of light. "The star is in many places now," she said.

Lila tilted her head back. The empty space in the sky waited above the lake. "The star shared itself," James said softly. Ollie, Mira, Bruna, Pip, and Lumi all stepped closer to the shore. Together, they lifted their small bits of light toward the water and toward the sky. The lake caught the glow and shimmered.

Slowly, the bits of brightness thinned and flowed upward. The empty space in the sky filled with a soft new star. The lake grew dimmer, but still felt gentle and safe. The animals stayed near one another in the silver moonlight. Lila took James’s hand. They walked home along the quiet shore. The new star twinkled above them, steady and small. Goodnight, Lila.
